Discover the Beauty of Nepal’s 8th Highest Mountain
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is an awe-inspiring journey that leads you to the base of Mount Manaslu, the 8th highest mountain in the world. Known as Nepal’s hidden gem, this trek is perfect for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure. With fewer crowds compared to other famous treks in Nepal, it offers an intimate experience with nature, culture, and the magnificent Himalayas. The trek is a great combination of natural beauty, spiritual experiences, and adventure, making it one of the best trekking destinations in Nepal.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek starts from the scenic drive to Aarughat and follows the Budi Gandaki River, taking you through lush forests, remote villages, and traditional Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. As you gradually ascend, you’ll witness stunning mountain views, including the majestic Mount Manaslu, Annapurna II, and Himlung Himal. The Larkya La Pass, the highest point of the trek at 5,213 meters, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.
Along the way, you will immerse yourself in the rich Tibetan-influenced culture of the Nupri region, passing through ancient villages and experiencing the traditional lifestyle that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. After crossing the pass, descend through alpine valleys and villages before merging with the Annapurna Circuit. The trek ends with a drive back to Pokhara and Kathmandu.
The best time to visit the Manaslu Circuit Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons.
Spring (March to May): During spring, the weather is mild and the days are long, offering perfect trekking conditions. The forests are lush and vibrant, with rhododendron blooms adding splashes of color along the trail. This season is also ideal for those who want to experience the Himalayas in full bloom.
Autumn (September to November): Autumn is the peak trekking season in Nepal, offering clear skies and perfect visibility for stunning mountain views. The weather is dry, with cool temperatures, making it ideal for high-altitude trekking. The region’s beauty is at its best, with crystal-clear skies allowing for breathtaking panoramic vistas.
Winter (December to February) and Summer (June to August) are generally avoided due to harsh weather conditions. Winter brings cold temperatures and heavy snow, especially at higher altitudes, while the monsoon season (summer) can make the trails slippery and challenging due to heavy rainfall.
The Manaslu Circuit Trek spans approximately 177 kilometers (110 miles), with daily hikes ranging from 15 to 20 kilometers (9 to 12 miles). The trek is considered moderate to challenging, particularly when crossing the Larkya La Pass at a high altitude. While it doesn’t require technical climbing skills, it does demand good physical fitness and stamina. Trekkers should be prepared for a variety of terrains, including steep climbs, rocky paths, and alpine conditions.
While traditionally a camping trek, the Manaslu Circuit now offers tea house accommodations in many of the villages along the trail. These cozy lodges provide a more comfortable and accessible trekking experience, allowing trekkers to enjoy warm meals and rest in simple but welcoming surroundings. The tea houses also allow you to interact with local communities and experience Nepalese hospitality.
